Curriculum Updates

St. Barbara administration and faculty have made a three year commitment to the study of Robert Marzano’s work, Classroom Instruction that Works.  Mr. Marzano is the top educational researcher today.  He has been instrumental in identifying educational strategies that teach higher order thinking skills as a means to improving student learning.  The faculty practices the strategies in their classrooms, meet with each other to discuss their progress and participate in peer and administrative observations.  Our principal, Mrs. Hurckes, has had the opportunity to participate in staff development training with Mr. Marzano.

The second, third and fourth grade classrooms received new science textbooks published by Scott Foresman.  Illinois Textbook loan money will be used to purchase the new science series for first grade.

We will use Illinois Textbook Loan monies to purchase a new science program for first and fifth grades.  A new social studies program will be purchased for second through fifth grades.

The fine arts program continues to evolve into a first rate curriculum.  This year’s focus is Native American art and culture.  In addition to the hands-on approach to art, fine arts teacher, Mrs. Lovato, has partnered with the Field Museum to bring artifacts to the school. Our fine arts fair is scheduled for April 8, 2008.  Keep the date open to visit us.  You will be delightfully surprised by what you see.
